The 17,874-acre Caddo and 20,313-acre Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) National Grasslands are located in north-central Texas, northeast and northwest of the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex in Fannin, Wise, and Montague counties

Before they were purchased by the federal government in the late 1930's, these grasslands were mostly abandoned farms and ranches suffering severe soil erosion from poor agricultural practices. Since 1955, the national grasslands in Texas, along with the national forests, have been managed by the USDA-Forest Service.
