The Ruby Mountains Wilderness and East Humboldt Wilderness sit astride a high ridgeline of mountains running almost 100 miles south from Wells. The East Humboldt Wilderness, the northeast extension, includes 36,000 acres; the Ruby Mountains Wilderness to the south comprises more than 90,000 acres. They are among 14 ranges in the State included in the Nevada Wilderness Protection Act of 1989. Towering 5,000 feet above the sagebrush flats of eastern Nevada, these mountains are "alpine islands" alive with alpine scenary, lake basins, streams, wildflowers, meadows, stands of aspen and conifer, and abundant wildlife. Most is hidden from view of the interstate traveler who skirts their steep slopes.
