The Kootenai National Forest offers some of the finest recreation opportunities in Montana. Elevations range from 8,738 feet atop Snowshoe Peak to 1,862 feet where the Kootenai River leaves the forest and the State, the lowest point in Montana. The Kootenai is tryly a forest of multiple use. The diversity of tree and other plant species is among the greatest in the Northwest. Wildlife species on the Kootenai include, elk, moose, bighorn sheep, deer, mountain lion and many other species. The Kootenai also has a few threatened and endangered species such as grizzly bear, gray wolf, lynx, bald eagle, and bull trout. This map also incorporates the east half of the Kaniksu National Forest in Idaho.
