Located in the piney hills and hardwood bottoms of central and northern Louisiana, the 600,000-acre Kisatchie National Forest is a treasure trove of natural resources. The Kisatchie has five ranger districts, each geographically separate, and spans seven parishes. Although Louisiana is generally regarded as being swampy and flat, this is only partly true of Kisatchie. The Caney, Kisatchie, and Winn Ranger Districts are located in rolling hill country. While the hills are steep and rocky in the Kisatchie District, the forest flattens out along floodplains near streams. The forest contains the headwaters of the Calcasieu, Ouachita, and tributaries of the Red Rivers and the watersheds many smaller streams.
