The Frank Church - River of No Return Wilderness was created by Congress with the passage of the Central Idaho Wilderness Act on July 23, 1980. This Wilderness includes over 2.2 million acres of rugged canyons and towering mountains, making it the largest outside Alaska. The Middle Fork of the Salmon Wild and Scenic River, and the Salmon Wild and Scenic River are within this Wilderness, as is the source of the Selway River, Which is a part of the Wild and Scenic River system.
